In 1922 Andre Citroën organized the first Citroën expedition from Touggourt, Algeria to Timbuktu, Mali. On 7th of January in 1923, after 21 days of traveling, the convoy made it to their destination making them the first people to drive across Sahara.

Encouraged by the success of the first travel Andre Citroën wanted to go further and organized second expedition dubbed Croisière noire (Black journey) all the way through Africa from Colomb-Béchar, Algeria to Cape Town, South-Africa. Convoy of 8 half-tracks and 24 men started their journey on 28th of October in 1924 and arrived in Cape Town on 26th of June in 1925 this time making them the first people to drive across the whole continent of Africa.

In 1931 third Citroën expedition, Croisière jaune (Yellow journey), was organized. This time across Asia from Beirut, Lebanon to Beijing, China. The voyage lasted from 4th of April 1931 to 12th of February 1932. It was the first time anyone has driven a car in Himalaya and the convoy also set the world altitude record for cars, 4 208m (13 806ft), in the process.

I happened to find this documentary about the expeditions on Youtube and thought to share it with you. My original intention was to write only a short introduction to the subject but I guess the end result isn't that short. Oh well...
